Clark, John

JOHN CLARK was not best equipped when he joined Radlett. In his first away match, at Berkhamsted, he had plimsolls but no boots, trousers but no sweater. Ian Phillips, always generous, offered him one of his sweaters—with the red and blue stripes of Old Malvernians’ and round the middle—about the size of a loaf—a hole. Clark declined the offer.

“That was nothing new for Phillips!” laughs Clark. “He wore a safety pin to keep his trousers up—and they were often undone. And if the ball went past you, Ian would be the only one to dive for it. His trousers were permanently green.
