Marshall, Bill

MARSHALL’S CLANGER

LIKE Radlett’s old Newberries ground, Southill Park has a tree, a cedar not an elm, about 40 yards from the wicket, which if hit means a two for the batsman.

Bill Marshall, the club’s left-arm spinner, was fielding at third-man when the ball raced past him behind the tree. He ran round, picked up and hurled the ball in under the branches. The ball ricocheted off a roller parked next to the tree with a loud clang and rebounded behind Marshall over the boundary for four.
